The 37th Brigade was established in February 2023 as part of the Ukrainian Naval Infantry's expansion, which also saw the creation of four other new marine brigades. It was formed from a battalion of the 79th Air Assault Brigade and veteran officers from the 36th Marine Brigade. The unit has been equipped with a mix of new Western-supplied gear and old Soviet stockpiles, including Canadian Roshel Senators, British Mastiffs, French AMX-10 RCs, and Soviet-era towed artillery and small arms.

The brigade first saw active combat in Novodonetske, a front-line settlement in southern Donetsk Oblast, beginning on June 3. They engaged the DNR Militia's Vostok Battalion without armored support, using an intricate network of artillery cover to move their troop transports close to Russian positions for attacks before retreating beyond the range of Russian artillery. This tactic enabled the brigade to make a slow but steady advance in the region during the initial phase of the 2023 Ukrainian counteroffensive.

Given the 36th Marine Brigade's origins from Ukrainian loyalists during the Russian occupation of Crimea, Western media has speculated that the Ukrainian Armed Forces may plan to use the 37th Brigade and its sister brigades for a naval invasion of the peninsula, should they liberate the southern Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia Oblasts.
